Automatic Fact Recall
How do we move information from short term to long term memory?
-
It has to make sense and be familiar.
-
Finding a pattern, rule or underlying principle in the material enhances memory.
-
Using association methods is one of the best retention mechanisms that we can use in learning. It is also a method that is not used to its' maximum potential
-
Visualization - studies on visualization prove that images are much more memorable than words.
-
Repetition - 5/5 Rule. Repeat the fact 5 times a day for 5 days.
Various methods of "finger math" have been used for many years, using the concepts of place value similar to those involved in the operation of the abacus. In Korea, digital (in the original sense of "digit") arithmetic is known as Chisenbop. Any number up to 99 can be represented on the hands with this method.
Research has indicated that increased mathematics automaticity correlates to improved student performance in mathematics (Pegg, 2005; Cumming, 1999; Mason, 2006).
